The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, has resigned.
His resignation was contained in a handwritten letter he personally signed, dated August 24, 2025.
Parts of the letter read: “I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025.
“This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state. I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals.
“I Pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency”.
The former speaker who emerged as governor Alia’s preferred choice against the choice Hon. Becky Orpin, the legislator preferred by the Secretary to the government of the federation, George Akume had had a smooth working relationship with governor Alia until he fell out over what his loyalists say was his insistence that the Assembly should be treated better by the governor.
According to an aide of the governor who confided in whitewaterdigest.com, the speaker was forced to resign after the “governor discovered that he was corrupt, fond of intimidating his colleagues and gross insubordination to the governor and incompetence. he knew that the choice before him was to either resign or he would be impeached. He chose the lesser option by resigning” the aide said.
The last straw that seems to have broken the camel’s back was the failure of the state House of Assembly to confirm the nomination of Dr Yangien Ornguga as a commissioner nominee.
Dr Ornguga’s rejection was because of several petitions against him both from his former students in the Faculty of Law of Benue state University and other sources. Dr Ornguga was accused of deliberately failing his law students for as flimsy a reason as their failure to spell his name correctly
It was gathered that the Benue state governor was no longer comfortable with the speaker because ‘he was tilting towards the secretary to the government of the federation. The governor had to move in because if he allowed the speaker to continue in his position, he might impeach the governor. There is no way we would allow that to happen” another source said.
