The Federal High Court in Lagos has discharged and acquitted former governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose of all charges on money Laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Fayose had been standing trial on an 11-count charges on alleged money Laundering and fraud charges, dating back to 2018 after his second stint as the governor of Ekiti state.
After his initial arraignment in 2018, he was again re-arraigned in 2019 alongside his company Spotless Investment Limited.
The EFCC had accused the former governor of receiving the sum of N2.2 Billion from the office of the National Security Adviser through the former Minister of Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro during the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti.
According to the EFCC, the funds were part of a larger N6.9 Billion disbursed for non-existent contracts and allegedly laundered by the former governor.
But the Federal High Court in its judgement held that the evidence presented by the EFCC was not sufficient to sustain the charges levelled against the defendant.
It upheld the no case submission of the defense team, adding that the prosecution failed to establish a Prima Facie case against the former governor to warrant further defense.
It dismissed the case in its entirety and discharged and acquitted the former governor.
