A Makurdi-based Lawyer and Human rights activist, Justin Gbagir has resigned his position as the Executive Director of Justice And Rights Initiative (JRI) to pursue a career in active politics, citing the need to support the policies of governor Hyacinth Alia as one of the reasons for his decision.
Addressing a Press Conference in Makurdi, Barr Gbagir said though he had spent a substantial part of his legal career working tirelessly to address challenges facing communities, advocate for those in need, champion the courses that empower and uplift the vulnerable in the society, “I recognize that to create meaningful change, we must engage at multiple levels, including within our political systems.
“I believe that bringing our shared values and insights into government can help bridge gaps and create policies that will better serve our citizens” he said.
According to him, “my decision to contest for the State House of Assembly is from the backdrop that the legislative arm of government plays a crucial role as a symbol of democracy. Legislatures are composed of elected representatives who reflect the will of the people. This electoral process allows citizens to have a voice in the decision-making that affects their lives, ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered”.
Speaking on the government of Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, Barr. Gbagir said “since assumption of office as the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Revd. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has faced stiff opposition from stakeholders, particularly members of his party who have claimed “he ran away with a pot of soup.” This opposition has led to chaotic political atmosphere in the state and has impacted negatively on governance and delivery of dividends of democracy.
“The need to support the Governor’s second term bid and to play a vital and critical role in the development agenda of our dear state therefore, has motivated me to run for the State House of Assembly for Buruku State Constituency to be part of the new wave of development in Benue State. The lack of understanding of the Governor’s policy initiatives and priorities by the political stakeholders is not unconnected to determination and commitment of the Governor to place the people at the center stage of his governance.
“I promise to prioritize and support the policy goals or initiatives of the Governor that will impact positively on the lives of the Benue people. We must seek to ensure that every voice is heard and that no one is left behind in our pursuit of progress. As a legislator, I pledge to uphold the values of integrity, respect, and dedication to service. I will advocate fiercely, listen intently, and act with compassion, keeping at heart the best interest of our dear state” he said
