President Tinubu sacks military chiefs, days after rumours of Coup

President Bola Tinubu has named new replacements for the Chiefs of Army, Airforce and Navy days after rumours of plans of military coup took centre stage in Nigeria.

However, the immediate past chief of Army Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede was rewarded with a higher responsibility in what pundits say may have been reward for loyalty by the president. he was named the Chief of Defence Staff.

In a six paragraph statement signed by Sunday Dare, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, the change in leadership of the armed forces of Nigeria was “part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture”

“The statement reads:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved changes in the hierarchy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

“Under the new appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede becomes the Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa.

“Major-General W. Shaibu has been named the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke is the new Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas assumes office as the Chief of Naval Staff.

“The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position.

“President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their dedicated service and patriotic leadership, while urging the new appointees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, vigilance, and unity within the Armed Forces.

“All appointments take immediate effect”.
