A Magistrate Court sitting in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail to human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, alongside several protesters arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to a report by Abuja-based Daily Trust newspapers, others inmates granted bail by the court are Aloy Ejimakor, counsel for the detained leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu; his brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu and 11 others.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’I’d issued the bail order on Friday after the defendants were arraigned on charges bordering on unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace.
According to the ruling, the court granted Sowore and the other protesters bail in the sum of N500,000 each, subject to the condition that they present a verified National Identification Number (NIN).
The magistrate also directed the defendants to present their three-year tax clearance certificates and submit their passports as part of the bail conditions.
It will be recalled that Sowore was arrested on Thursday by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force after leaving the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore, who led the #FreeNnamdiKanuProtest in Abuja, on Monday, had fled when the police arrested other protesters.
He had subsequently taken to social media to announce the arrest of 13 protesters, including Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and lawyer.
The police had warned those planning to stage the protest not to move close to some restricted parts of the nation’s capital, but the activist stood his ground, saying it was his right to protest.
“Today, I met with Kanu Agabi, the lead lawyer for Kanu Nnandi, at the Federal High Court, and he disclosed that his team will be withdrawing from the case, leaving Nnamdi Kanu to continue his trial without representation. He was s sure that it was completely political,” Sowore had posted before his arrest.
As he made his way out of the court, a police team accosted him and asked that he follow them to the station.
After back and forth, the politician and activist went with them.
