The Presidency yesterday reacted to the threat by the President of the United states of America, Donald Trump, that the US may intervene militarily to stop what he called the genocide being perpetrated against Christians in Nigeria by Islamic terrorists.
President Trump had posted on Saturday that he had directed the Secretary of War of the United States to prepare for a possible military intervention in Nigeria to flush our Islamic terrorists targeting Christians in Nigeria.
But in a muted reaction to the Threat, Presidential Aide, Daniel Bwala in his official X handle said “the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or in fact all faiths and no faiths, the differences if they exist would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days”.
And the official Spokesman of the President, Bayo Onanuga who is usually confrontation in his reactions to issues was rather humble and measured in his response saying “President Bola Tinubu was well ahead of the orchestrated game unfolding in America as he told the new service chiefs on Thursday what Nigerians expect of them”.
In his reaction, Mr Bwala wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that “both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump have shared interest in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity. President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorizing the sale of arms to Nigeria and President Tinubu has adequately utilized the opportunity in the fight against terrorism for which we have massive results to show for it. As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or in fact all faiths and no faiths, the differences if they exist would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in State House or White House”.
In his reaction also on X, Onanuga reproduced president Tinubu’s speech while swearing in the new service chief saying that Tinubu had already given the new service chiefs marching orders to stop the killings in the country.
Here is the excerpt of his speech:
“Security threats are constantly evolving, constantly mutating. Of grave concern to our administration is the recent emergence of new armed groups in the North-Central, North-West, and parts of the South. We must not allow these new threats to fester. We must be decisive and proactive. Let us smash the new snakes right in the head.
“I charge you, as the heads of our nation’s armed forces, to carry out your duties with patriotic zeal. Nigerians expect results, not excuses.
“I charge you also to be innovative, pre-emptive, and courageous. Let’s stay ahead of those who seek to threaten our peace. Let us deploy technology where necessary. We cannot allow the crisis that began in 2009 to persist any longer.
“I wish you success as you take up the challenge. I promise to provide all the support you need to get the job done”.
