56 students bag first class at Veritas varsity convocation
The Veritas University in Abuja, on Saturday, November 9, 2024, graduated 795 students with 56 awarded first class honours in various disciplines at the institution’s 13th convocation ceremony
Out of the graduating students, 716 were undergraduate while 79 graduated from the postgraduate school.
Out of the 716 undergraduate students, 56 came out with first class honours, 329 with second class upper division, 291 with second class lower division and 40 with third class.
Of the 56 first class graduates, 46 were ladies while only 13 were men, highlighting the dwindling performance of the male child in formal education in the country
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hyacinth Ichoku, who was noticeably elated at the feat achieved by the students said the impact of the institution had reflected in its standard of education.
According to Professor Ichoku, Veritas University students had recorded outstanding breakthroughs by winning awards for the school and country both at the national and international levels.
“Our students have continued to shine in the last years. The Software Engineering Department of the institution won the African Global Engineering Competition.
“We have also won the Commonwealth debating championship as well as an AI competition involving 150 universities” he emphasised
He added that the institution had inaugurated its endowment fund with the aim of generating funds to address the infrastructural needs of the university.
The Vice Chancellor said in its commitment to meeting the needs of the expanding student population, the institution had just completed the construction of two separate hostels, each to accommodate 500 students, while also expanding its digital hub that would facilitate international teaching and learning, adding that the university was planning the construction of its faculty of engineering and innovation.
Also speaking at the event, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, hailed Veritas University for its achievements, noting that the milestones it has achieved so far “resulted from years of hard work, resilience, and commitment to inculcating academics and moral values for the educational advancement of the country”.
The institution’s Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Matthew Kukah, said the country was at a crossroads as a result of the numerous challenges facing the country.
Kukah added that with the emergence of a new terrorist group, there was a need for the country to brace up to this challenge to avert future problems.
He charged the graduating students to deliver on the confidence reposed in them to help the country find a lasting solution to some of the challenges.
