The Tiv Cultural and Social Association, the apex body representing the Tiv ethnic group in Taraba State, has thrown its weight behind the establishment of a peace committee to address longstanding tensions between the Tiv and Jukun communities.
There have been lingering crises between the two communities in Taraba state during back to more than thirty years.
But in a sign that the two communities were ready for peace, the President General of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, Chief James Baka, noted that setting up of a peace committee would promote reconciliation, unity, and sustainable peace among all ethnic groups in the state.
Baka urged Governor Agbu Kefas to prioritize the formation of the committee, because of its potential to de-escalate conflicts and address underlying grievances between the Tiv and Jukun communities.
“The Tiv Cultural and Social Association remains hopeful that, through the collaborative efforts of our leaders, traditional institutions, and community members, peace will once again flourish in our land. We respectfully urge His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, to establish a peace committee.
“This committee should address the underlying issues and tensions between the Tiv and Jukun communities, develop strategies to de-escalate conflicts, and facilitate the return, resettlement, and reintegration of displaced persons. Such efforts would promote reconciliation and mutual understanding between our ethnic groups” he noted.
The group further expressed appreciation to Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and the Aku Uka of Wukari, His Royal Majesty Manu Ishaku Ada Ali, for their leadership and wise counsel, while also reiterating its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at fostering peace and harmony in the state.
