NIDCOM Demands Due Process over Detention of Nigerians in Mozambique

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has called on the Mozambique government to follow due process in the treatment of Nigerians detained in the south African Country, noting that if the Nigerians committed any offence, they should be formally charged to court.

In a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, the commission noted that  the denial of Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) that it detained other nationals besides 42 Nigerians does not answer the question because even the Nigerian High Commission has not been notified officially.

“Their families have been reaching out with distress calls and are worried about the condition of their spouses”  the statement quoted  Abike Dabiri-Erewa as saying.

According to him, “they confiscated their cell phones, personal belongings and money with them as at the time of arrest. The Embassy has written to their Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the office of the Attorney General”, she said.

Dabiri-Erewa added that if indeed the Nigerians committed any offence, the authorities should formally charge them to court of law, make the offence public or set them free as against illegally detaining them.

She stressed that the Nigerian government would not support any crime committed by any Nigerian in any country while stressing that no Nigerian should suffer for an offence they neither committed nor know the reason they are being detained.
