St. Theresa, Makurdi, earns period-friendly school recognition

The Benue state government has recognized St. Theresa Primary School, Makurdi,  as a period-friendly school following sustained menstrual health advocacy and institutional collaborations.

The recognition was made during the 2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration organized by First Step Action for Children Initiative. The Benue State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Theresa Ikwue, was represented at the event by Magdalene Andor, director of women affairs.

Ikwue said the achievement marks a significant milestone in efforts to break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation while ensuring that no girl is denied her right to education because of her menstrual cycle.

The event brought together representatives of the Benue State Ministry of Education, the Benue State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (BERWASSA), the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, school management, teachers, pupils and development partners. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting menstrual health and creating a supportive school environment for girls.

Speaking during the event, stakeholders emphasized that menstruation is a natural biological process that should never be a source of shame or discrimination.

They called for continued collaboration to provide accurate menstrual health information, improve water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, and foster positive attitudes toward menstrual hygiene management in schools.

Seember Saamo, director of education support services, who represented the Ministry of Education, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to supporting policies and programs that promote girls’ education and inclusive learning.

Similarly, BERWASSA General Manager Tony Mkpen, represented by Hembadoon Amusan, highlighted the importance of access to safe water and sanitation facilities as essential components of effective menstrual hygiene management. He said BERWASSA would establish menstrual health support facilities at the school to enable girls to manage their periods safely, comfortably and with dignity.

As part of the activities, school authorities and pupils demonstrated their commitment by signing a pledge to uphold the principles of a Period-Friendly School through the promotion of respect, inclusion and support for every girl during menstruation.
