NSITF Rehabilitates 78 Employees with Work-Related Disabilities

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has restored mobility and renewed hope for 78 workers who sustained work-related disabilities after successfully providing them with prosthetic limbs and other assistive devices under its Prosthesis Provision Exercise.

Speaking at the presentation of the final report on the programme in Abuja, Managing Director of NSITF, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, said all identified beneficiaries had been assessed, fitted with appropriate prostheses, trained on their use and discharged after satisfactory evaluation.

Represented by the Executive Director (Operations), Mrs. Mojisola Alli Macaulay, he said the exercise which commenced in April 2026, was closely monitored by the Fund’s Claims and Compensation Department from inception to completion.

Faleye noted that beneficiaries who could not participate due to death, inability to establish contact or refusal to honour invitations were replaced from a supplementary list to ensure the programme’s successful completion.

According to him, the intervention covered eight above-knee prostheses, one hip disarticulation prosthesis, 11 below-knee prostheses, 12 below-elbow prostheses, five above-elbow prostheses, one trans-humeral prosthesis and 40 silicone partial hand prostheses, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 78.

He said: “Sequel to the interim report submitted previously, I am pleased to report that the prosthesis provision exercise has now been successfully concluded. All identified beneficiaries under the approved programme have been assessed, fitted with the appropriate prostheses, trained on their use, and discharged after satisfactory evaluation.

“Where beneficiaries could not participate due to reasons such as inability to establish contact, refusal to attend after notification, or death, they were replaced from the supplementary list to ensure the successful completion of the exercise.”

Faleye commended the cooperation of prosthesis providers, employers, beneficiaries and the monitoring team, noting that their commitment ensured the success of the exercise. He also praised the providers for accommodating specialised clinical needs, including the provision of a hip disarticulation prosthesis where required.

General Manager, Claims and Compensation, Mrs. Nkiru Ede-Ogunnaike, said beneficiaries underwent comprehensive assessment, measurement, fabrication, fitting, gait and functional training before being discharged.

She said the programme had significantly improved the mobility, functionality and quality of life of the beneficiaries while advancing the Fund’s mandate of providing rehabilitation support to employees who sustained workplace injuries.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Solomon Sunday, an employee of Zodoson Industries in Abia State, described the intervention as life-changing.

According to him, many beneficiaries had become depressed after losing their limbs in workplace accidents but had regained hope through the NSITF intervention.

“We are deeply grateful to the Fund for giving us our lives back. Today, I can look forward to a brighter future. Beyond providing me with a prosthesis, NSITF has also given me the opportunity to acquire a new skill and earn a living. We sincerely thank God for using the Fund to change our stories,” he said.
