Allegations of Vote buying, low turnout and voter apathy dogged the conduct of the local council election in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Saturday with the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike clearly disappointed with the low turnout.
Daily Trust reports that Minister Wike who was shocked when he was told that only ten percent of registered voters turned out to vote at a polling station in Karshi prayed that more voters will show before the end of voting.
According to Daily Trust, after exchanging pleasantries, Wike asked the poll officials: ”How is the turnout?”, to which the ad-hoc official, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), said: ”We have only about 10 percent of registered voters who came out to vote.”
The Minister further asked: ”Only 10 percent? When are you supposed to start counting?
“By 2:30pm, sir,” the corps member responded, to which Wike said:”Hopefully there will be another 20 percent.”
But the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Amupitan who monitored the election in some polling units in the Municipal Area council expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections.
According to him, “You can see by yourself that the election is orderly and very efficient. The election is peaceful and those are the indices of a good election.
“So far, the efficiency of the BVAS is high and I am very satisfied because the BVAS are working effectively and efficiently.
“From what I have seen and heard from the presiding officers, it takes about less than five seconds to even accredit a voter.
“So far, I can say that the election is well organised. The election is peaceful from the calm atmosphere you have seen,” Amupitan said.
AIT reported that a voter in Giri in the Gwagwalada area council of the FCT alleged that some unknown persons were offering voters money in order to sway their votes
