CAN Raises Concern Over Conviction, Imprisonment of Christian Woman in Borno

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman in Borno State, raising questions about the protection of religious freedom and fundamental human rights in the country.

The woman, identified in circulating reports as Lami Samuel Dawa, was reportedly convicted in a case allegedly linked to the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.

CAN, however, said it was still verifying the precise circumstances surrounding the case and the legal basis for the conviction.

The Association disclosed that an appeal had already been filed, assuring that it would allow the judicial process to run its course.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the development raised important questions about the protection of religious freedom and fundamental rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.

The statement partly reads: “The Association believes that every individual has the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.”

It called on relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties were protected and that justice was served in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

CAN added that it would continue to monitor developments in the case and engage relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence, the Christian body said it remained committed to protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of every Nigerian, irrespective of religious background.
